The international airport Daniel Oduber (Liberia Airport ) is located only a few minutes away from downtown Liberia (pronounced Lee-beh-ria). Known as ¨The white city, it is the capital of the province of Guanacaste and the best example of the region’s culture. The city of Liberia is well maintained, with a nice Central Park and several old houses that show the colonial history of Liberia. Liberia Costa Rica is the main entry to Guanacaste and the most important city for those visitors that come driving from the neighboring countries of the North.
How to get to Liberia Costa Rica:
Driving on the Interamerican Highway about 40 km. north of the town of Cañas, it takes around 4 hours from Juan Santa Maria International Airport (San Jose Costa Rica main International Airport). Several local airlines like; Aero Bell, Nature air, SANSA or Taxi Aereo connect San Jose city to Liberia’s International Airport (2668-1010). Some international airlines that fly to Liberia Costa Rica are: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta and US Airways arriving from the U.S. Seasonal charters like Apple vacations also have flights. Liberia is the meeting point for bus transportation to many destinations throughout Guanacaste, Monteverde, Central Pacific, Arenal or even returning to San Jose Costa Rica.
What to do in downtown Liberia Costa Rica :
Internet Cafes are easily found in Liberia: Pura Vida Internet, 100 meters of central park. ($1 u.s.d per hour), Computer World and many others. Most Liberia Costa Rica hotels, hostels and bed and breakfast have at least one computer for guests to use.
Movies: There is one main shopping Mall in Liberia (Mall Plaza Liberia) and it is the only place available if you want to go to the Movies. It is about five minutes south of down town Liberia on a taxi.
To Study Spanish in Liberia and in Guanacaste there are several Institutes.
Walking Tour of Liberia Costa Rica: Start going down the historic Calle Real (Real Street), which has some of Liberia’s best preserved and restored colonial buildings. Visit Church La Ermita, located several blocks east of the central Park. The most important Holiday in Liberia Costa Rica is celebrated on July 25th when the Annexation Day of Guanacaste to Costa Rica (1824) is commemorated. Before this decision Guanacaste was a part of the Nicaraguan territory. Horse parades (Topes and Cabalgatas), music shows and festivals, folk dances and other fiestas can be witness year round in Liberia.
El Sabanero Museum (meaning the Costa Rican Cowboy Museum), located on the south side of the main church. In this museum you can learn about Costa Rican cowboy history. There is a Tourist info Center, 3 blocks south and 1 block east from Restaurant Paso Real, which is a very good restaurant located on a second floor with excellent view of the central park. Some other things to do or visit are: Visiting the Religious Art Museum, check the towns agenda for rodeos, folk dancing, sports court, horseback riding lessons, tours around Guanacaste, biking / hiking trails, event center, horse racing and Visit to the newest zoo Africa Mia.

The following Hostels and Hotels are very basic, but a good alternative for some visitors that want to spend less on their Liberia Hotel nights.

Hotel Guanacaste ( phone: 26660085) Located on the center of Liberia Costa Rica town and member of Hostelling International, offers shared dorms for $10/person with fans and cold baths, it is the official stop for Central American buses heading north to Nicaragua, Honduras ,El Salvador and Guatemala.
Hotel Casa Real: (Phone: 2666-3876) Shared rooms for $15 per person with cold water baths, $20 with private bath) cable TV, fans, transportation services to airport and tourist sites can also be arranged.
Hotel La Posada del Tope (Phone: 2666-3876), shared rooms for $15 with cold water baths), fans and shared cable TV.
Hotel La Casona (Phone: 2666-2971) located only half a block from the Central Park, room prices are $25 with fan and $40 with air conditioning. Private parking is available for guests.
Mid range accommodation in Liberia
for: ($40-$85).
Hostel Ciudad Blanca (Phone: 2666-3962) half a block east of restaurant Pizza Pronto, elegant stone mansion, small nice rooms for $50 u.s.d with breakfast included, a/c, cable TV and a restaurant with small bar.
Hotel & Cabins La Arena (Phone: 2666-4249) located south of Liberia, room prices go from $35 u.s.d with fan to $40 with a/c).
Hotel Boyeros (Phone: 2666-0722) located only five minutes from the central park of Liberia right in the Inter American Highway. Room rates go from $70 u.s.d with a/c, phone, cable TV, wireless internet, safe box, pools, safe parking and a restaurant open 24 hours has adequate access for guests with disabilities. Is one of the old hotels from Liberia. Make sure to ask for a room that is not close to the main highway.
