Daniel Oduber International Airport(LIR - Liberia international airport code) better known as Liberia Airport was inaugurated in 1995 and it is located approximately 8 kilometers from the city of Liberia ( 10 minutes driving distance) and is 220 Km (136 miles) northwest of the capital city of San José. If you are planning on driving from San Jose to the Liberia airport it may take almost four hours to get from one aiport to the other it will depend on weather and trafic conditions. It is the second most important airport of Costa Rica and features all services and international requirements, such as: migration office, an emergency medical technicians department, refueling service, a fire brigade department, bank services, telephones, internet, sanitary facilities, restaurant and cafeteria. In addition to this, only a few minutes from the airport you will find hotels, car rental agencies, tour operators, taxi service, banks, restaurants, domestic and international flights services. The airport of Liberia is very small with only a couple of buildings as its terminal area so its very simple to get around.
Arriving to the Liberia International Airport is an excellent option if you wish to visit places like Tamarindo, Golfo de Papagayo, Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Playas del Coco, Playa Samara, Ocotal, Punta Islita, Santa Rosa National Park, La cruz, Arenal volcano, Palo Verde National Park, the Ostional reserve, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the Guanacaste National Park, Monteverde, Nicaragua, and many more places of interest that are either in Guanacaste Province or on the neighboring areas.
The airport of Liberia in Guanacaste is a very good option if you’re planning a trip to Nicaragua, since it is located only one hour and 30 minutes away from the border with this neighboring country.The area of the border is called Peñas Blancas and it is very interesting to do a short trip of a couple of nights to the beautiful Colonial city of Granada. The total expenses of crossing this border is less than nine american dollars per person and very few countries require a visa to entry nicaragua.

Driving directions from Liberia
Driving from the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) to down town Liberia takes around 10 minutes and if you are driving to the beach areas there are many different driving times. For example to go to Hermosa beach or Papagallo Gulf it takes only about 20 minutes. To go to tamarindo it may take one hour. At the moment there are no tolls on any of these routes. Most of the routes in Guanacaste are very well marked but if you prefer to get a GPS, most car rental companies offer them as an option.
Taxis
Taxis into the city of Liberia(Liberia,Guanacaste) take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. They cost between $16-$26 Taxis are cash only and can be paid either in colones or U.S. dollars. Make sure to take a cab in the designated areas or ask a uniformed airport employee to help you since you do not want to end up in the hands of informal taxi drivers. It´s a nice practice to tip at least a dollar per bag if the taxi driver assists you.
Car Services and private Vans and buses.
For a little more than a taxi, you can have excellent service in a mini van or a sedan. Services such as helping with luggage, airport baggage claim greeting, and advance reservations are all standard and if requested you may have an English speaking driver or guide assisting you at the airport. Public Transportation from and to Liberia airport.
The public bus from the Liberia International airport to down town Liberia leaves at the following times: 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The same bus returns 30 minutes after arriving the city back to the airport.
