Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park

 

Over 14 000 hectares vide National Park Rincón de la Vieja is situated 27 km north-east from the city of Liberia and was created in 1973 to conserve the surrounding flora and fauna and to protect rivers and streams which are important watersheds in the area.

Rincón de la Vieja national park is named after its 1895 meter high volcano, there is another higher crater measuring 1916 meters, however, only the main crater has steam activity; the other craters are slowly starting to erode. The last severe eruption was in 1983.

South of the main crater there is a pure water lake Los Jilgueros. The National Park is extended to the lush and wet all year round Caribbean side and it also spreads to the Pacific side where the difference of the dry season is notable.

In the trails of the cloud forest you find a high density of Costa Rica’s national flower beautiful La Guaria Morada orchid, exquisite 257 bird species and a variety of mammals. With good luck and a lot of patience there is a possibility to see some wild cats too. In the park there are amazing boiling thermal waters and geysers which have a great soothing therapeutic affluence for the body and mind.
