Isla Bolaños Wildlife Refuge

Isla Bolaños is a 25 hectare island accessible only by boat, located about 1,5 kilometers from Punta Descartes, northwestern Costa Rica. The island was found in 1981 and it protects seabirds; particularly the brown pelican and frigate birds and their rare nesting sites in the cliffs or treetops.

The rocky ground of the island is over 40 millions years old. The island is one of the driest places in the country; due to the rough soil, the vegetation of the island is very meager, however there are medium-sized stunted trees growing very densely.

There are trails for visitors to explore around and see how the land lies. Visit the interesting sandy beach at the eastern part of the island with its seashells, peculiar sized crabs and a graceful view.
