Nearly 40,000 inhabitants make Liberia their home. And thousands of tourists flock to Liberia, which serves as a regional hub of the Costa Rican northwest. The international airport Daniel Oduber (Liberia Airport) is located only 4 miles (six kilometers) from downtown Liberia (pronounced Lee-beh-ria). Known as “The white city”, it is the capital of the province of Guanacaste and an excellent example of the region’s culture and traditions. The city of Liberia is well maintained, with a nice central park and several old houses that illustrate the colonial history of Liberia. The city boasts a modern church, typical of many Costa Rican towns, which faces a plaza replete with locally-owned shops and restaurants adjacent to the plaza. Guanacaste is proud to host an expo on an annual basis that takes place in July, and celebrates the annexation of the Guanacaste Province on 25 July 1824.Liberia Costa Rica is the main entry to Guanacaste and the most important city for those visitors that come driving from the neighboring countries to the North.
How to get to Liberia Costa Rica:
It takes around 4 hours from Juan Santa Maria International Airport, located in Alajuela a few minutes west of San Jose (Costa Rica´s main International Airport). Several local airlines like; Aero Bell, Nature air, SANSA or Taxi Aereo connect the San Jose area to Liberia’s International Airport (phone: 2668-1010). Some international airlines that fly to Liberia Costa Rica are the following: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta, and, US Airways. Liberia is also a hub for bus transportation to many destinations throughout Guanacaste, Monteverde, Central Pacific, Arenal, and the return leg for many tours originating from San Jose Costa Rica. Tourists often pass Liberia en route to many popular beaches on the Pacific Coast, such as Playa del Coco, Playa Hermosa, Playa Tamarindo, and even the Papagayo Peninsula.
International Airport (2668-1010). Some international airlines that fly to Liberia Costa Rica are: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta and US Airways arriving from the U.S. Seasonal charters like Apple vacations also have flights. Liberia is the meeting point for bus transportation to many destinations throughout Guanacaste, Monteverde, Central Pacific, Arenal or even returning to San Jose Costa Rica.

What to do in downtown Liberia Costa Rica :
Internet Cafes are readily found in Liberia, including Pura Vida Internet, 100 meters of central park at an average of $1 USD per hour, Computer World and many others. Most Liberia Costa Rica hotels, hostels and bed and breakfasts have at least one computer for guests to use.
In terms of movies, there is one main shopping Mall in Liberia (Mall Plaza Liberia) and it is the only place available if you want to go to the movies. It is about five minutes south of downtown Liberia by taxi.
To Study Spanish in Liberia and in Guanacaste there are several Institutes available.

The Museo de Sabanero is also situated in Liberia, and well worth the visit if time allows.

It is the official stop for Central American buses heading north to Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
Hotel Casa Real: (phone: 2666-3876) shared rooms for $15 per person with cold baths, ($20 with private bath) cable TV, and fans. Transportation services to airport and tourist sites can be arranged.

Mid range accommodation in Liberia
Hostel Ciudad Blanca (Phone: 2666-3962) half a block east of the restaurant Pizza Pronto, the Hotel Ciudad Blanca is an elegant stone mansion offering small nice rooms for $50 USD with breakfast included, A/C, cable TV and a restaurant with small bar.
Hotel & Cabins La Arena (Phone: 2666-4249) Located south of Liberia, the Hotel & Cabins La Arena offers rooms that range from $35 with fans to $40 with A/C.
Hotel Boyeros (Phone: 2666-0722) Located only five minutes from the central park of Liberia a stones through from the Inter American Highway the Hotel Boyeros offers rooms at around $70 with A/C, phone, cable TV, wireless internet, safe box, pools, safe parking and a restaurant open 24 hours. A nice feature of the hotel is that it has adequate access for guests with disabilities. Hotel Boyeros is one of the oldest hotels in Liberia. An important travel tip is to make sure to ask for a room that is not close to the main highway.
