Nearly 40,000 inhabitants make Liberia their home. And thousands of tourists flock to Liberia, which serves as a regional hub of the Costa Rican northwest. The international airport Daniel Oduber (Liberia Airport) is located only 4 miles (six kilometers) from downtown Liberia (pronounced Lee-beh-ria). Known as “The white city”, it is the capital of the province of Guanacaste and an excellent example of the region’s culture and traditions. The city of Liberia is well maintained, with a nice central park and several old houses that illustrate the colonial history of Liberia. The city boasts a modern church, typical of many Costa Rican towns, which faces a plaza replete with locally-owned shops and restaurants adjacent to the plaza. Guanacaste is proud to host an expo on an annual basis that takes place in July, and celebrates the annexation of the Guanacaste Province on 25 July 1824.Liberia Costa Rica is the main entry to Guanacaste and the most important city for those visitors that come driving from the neighboring countries to the North.
