Daniel Oduber International Airport(LIR - Liberia international airport code) better known as Liberia Airport was inaugurated in 1995 and it is located approximately 8 kilometers from the city of Liberia ( 10 minutes driving distance) and is 220 Km (136 miles) northwest of the capital city of San José. If you are planning on driving from San Jose to the Liberia airport it may take almost four hours to get from one airport to the other it will depend on weather and traffic conditions. This is a very important airport for Costa Rica and it features a great variety of services, such as: migration office, an emergency medical technicians department, refueling service, a fire brigade department, bank services, telephones, internet, sanitary facilities, restaurant and cafeteria. In addition to this, only a few minutes from the airport you will find hotels, car rental agencies, tour operators, taxi service, banks, restaurants, domestic and international flights services. The airport of Liberia is very small with only a couple of buildings as its terminal area so it´s very simple to get around.
Arriving to the Liberia International Airport is an excellent option if you wish to visit places like Tamarindo, Golfo de Papagayo, Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Playas del Coco, Playa Samara, Ocotal, Punta Islita, Santa Rosa National Park, La cruz, Arenal volcano, Palo Verde National Park, the Ostional Reserve, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the Guanacaste National Park, Monteverde, Nicaragua, and many other places of interest that are either in Guanacaste Province or in the neighboring areas.
The airport of Liberia in Guanacaste is a very good option if you’re planning a trip to Nicaragua, since it is located only one hour and 30 minutes away from the border with this neighboring country. The area of the border is called Peñas Blancas and it is very interesting to do a short trip of a couple of nights to the beautiful Colonial city of Granada. The total expenses of crossing this border is less than nine American dollars per person and very few countries require a visa to entry Nicaragua.
Presently the Costa Rican government is planning to increase the area of the air terminal, which will give a better service to the high amount of tourists and locals, who day by day choose Guanacaste as one of the best destinations in Costa Rica.

Driving directions from Liberia airport to Down town Liberia.
Driving from the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) to down town Liberia takes around 10 minutes and if you are driving to the beach areas the driving time will vary depending on the beach you are planning to visit. For example to go to Hermosa beach or Papagallo Gulf it takes only about 20 minutes. To go to Tamarindo it may take one hour. At the moment there are no tolls on any of these routes. For information on renting a car please call 1-877 281-8515. Parking for long periods of time at the airport is not a common practice. Most of the routes in Guanacaste are very well marked but if you prefer to get a GPS, most car rental companies offer them as an option. For some secondary roads, if you are visiting the beaches of the southern part of the peninsula, it is recommended to rent a 4 x 4.
Taxis
Taxis (Liberia,Guanacaste) may take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes from the airport to the city of Liberia. They cost between $16-$26. Taxis accept cash only and can be paid in either colones or U.S. dollars. Make sure to take a cab in the designated areas or ask a uniformed airport employee to help you since you do not want to end up in the hands of informal taxi drivers. It´s a nice practice to tip at least a dollar per bag if the taxi driver assists you.

Public Transportation from and to Liberia airport.
The public bus from the Liberia International airport to downtown Liberia leaves at the following times: 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The same bus gets back to the airport 30 minutes after arriving in the city center of Liberia.
